With FMCS Help, Hawaii Teachers and State Reach Agreement to End Long Negotiation

After two years of negotiation and a week of high-intensity, nearly nonstop mediation provided by FMCS mediator Carol Catanzariti, the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) and representatives of the Hawaiian state government announced that they had reached a new collective bargaining agreement, which has now been ratified by members of the teachers' union.

At a signing ceremony April 16, Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie credited the work of Commissioner Catanzariti and her assistance to the parties. “We are also grateful to the negotiating teams and to Carol Catanzariti of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services, who mediated the negotiations to reach the March 25 agreement,” Governor Abercrombie stated.

The parties reached their tentative agreement early on March 23 after an all-day and all-night negotiation, assisted by the FMCS mediator, to end their lengthy dispute. Teachers voted to ratify the agreement April 17.

The new agreement covers a reported 13,500 HSTA members.

Below is a sample of recent news media coverage of the long negotiation and tentative agreement as well as statements from the parties:
